Miley Cyrus’ evolution over the last decade

YEAR: 2013

HOW SHE SPENT IT: This was a big year for Miley, who put her Disney days well and truly behind her.

The singer hired Britney Spears’ manager Larry Rudolph and changed her look and sound.

In May, Miley was listed first in Maxim‘s Hot 100 of the year.

In June she released her comeback single ‘We Can’t Stop’ which became a worldwide commercial success.

At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards in August, Miley performed with Robin Thicke and twerked with a foam finger while wearing a skin-coloured latex two piece.

That same day, she released ‘Wrecking Ball’. The music video showed her swinging naked on a wrecking ball, and was viewed over 19 million times within its first day. It became the first of her singles to top the Hot 100 chart in the US, having sold over two million copies.

Her fourth studio album, Bangerz, was hip-hop inspired and released in October.

In September, Miley declared cannabis “the best drug on earth”. This same month, she and Liam called off their engagement and split up.

“I don’t think I realised what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn’t change being engaged. It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years,” she says while appearing on Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013. “But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy.”

Miley hosted Saturday Night Live for a second time in October.

She was chosen by Time as one of their finalists for Person of the Year in November and declared Artist of the Year by MTV in December.
